After the screening, Lee Broughton will present a paper entitled 'True grit? Charting the representation of female characters in classical Hollywood Westerns'.  The paper will highlight the numerous prescriptive codes and tropes that filmmakers have routinely employed in order to restrict the onscreen activities of female characters in Hollywood Westerns. Particular reference will be made to the character of Mattie Ross who appears in both the 1969 and 2010 film adaptations of Charles Portis' 'True Grit'.
