Remembering Gerhard Rachold


Gerhard Rachold was born in Ranis, Thüringen, Germany on September 3, 1928. After high school he attended a drama school and then started in 1947 as a stage actor on the stage in Weimar, before 1954, he had appeared on stages from Stolberg, Staßfurt, Crimmitschau, Erfurt to Berlin, where he was part of the ensemble of the Berlin Theater of Friendship until 1960. From 1960 to 1967 he was part of the ensemble cast of the DEFA film studios, followed by a decade of activity at the Kleist Theatre Frankfurt.
 
Parallel to his work with the stage Rachold appeared in various film and television productions for DEFA and on television with the GDR. His film debut was in 1956 in the Rachold János Veiczis film “Zwischenfall in Benderath” (Incident at Benderath), followed by numerous other films and film genres, including four DEFA Indian films: “The Sons of Great Bear” (1966), “Osceola” (1971), “Uzana” (1974) and “The Long Ride to School” (1981) as well as children films, mainly under the direction of Rolf Losansky.
 
After the death of his wife, Rachold committed suicide on May 18, 1993.
 
Today we remember Gerhard Rachold on what would have been his 85th birthday.
