Remembering Karel Svoboda


Karel Svoboda was born on December 19, 1938 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He is the brother of composer Jirí Svoboda [1945-2004]. Karel became one of the most successful Czech composers of popular music, working for almost all popular Czech singers such as Karel Gott and writing scores for about 900 national and international films and TV shows. He abandoned his university studies in his third year of medicine, to became a member of the rock band "Mefisto". Among his many film scores were two for Euro-westerns: “Sing, Cowboy, Sing” (1980) starring Dean Reed and the again for Reed’s unfinished film “Bloody Heart” (1986).
 
Svoboda was married twice, first to model Hana Bohatová [1969-1992] and then to Vendula Horová [1995-2007. He had two children Klára who died of leukemia in 2000 and a son Jakub in 2005.
 
Karel was found dead in his garden after shooting himself on 28 January 28, 2007.
 
Today we remember Karel Svoboda on what would have been his 75th birthday.
